Developmental Process

Step 1.   Students will engage in a class discussion to share the hazards they have identified in the office.
Step 2.   Students will then identify ways in which the hazards can be prevented by writing the safety precautions, on the right side of the handout to differentiate between the hazards and safety precautions. Students will be given three (3) minutes to complete this exercise.
Step 3.   Students will then discuss the safety rules of an office in a small class discussion.
Step 4.   Students will be given five minutes to write down the information accurately in their books.
Content Analysis
Safety Rules of an Office
Ø  Use a step ladder, instead of a chair or other moveable object, to reach the tops of high cabinets.
Ø  Close file drawers immediately after use. Note that when top drawers of cabinets are left open the cabinets the cabinets may topple over. Some cabinets have a built in device that prevents more than one draw from being open at one time.
Ø  Pay attention to the placement of cabinets. Place them away from doors and windows that swing open, away from damp areas, and certainly not in corridors.
Ø  Use locking devices on cabinets to ensure that the contents are not accessible to unauthorized persons.
Ø  Do not eat or drink over documents.
Ø  Documents should not be left lying around-they could easily be lost or be read by unauthorized persons.

Everybody has responsibility
The following are examples of ways in which employees can help safeguard their own safety and that of their work Colleagues.
Visual display units (VDU’s) can cause eye strain, neck, wrist and elbow pain, stress, tension, headaches, dizziness and irritability. These symptoms can be reduced by setting up the workstation correctly.
Manual Handling which involves lifting can result in injuries. These can be avoided by careful positioning of the body. The straight back position eliminates the risk of uneven stress being applied to the discs or abdominal muscles. Correctly positioning the feet apart, but no wider than the hips ensures that the whole body is balanced during the lifting process.
Equipment should only be serviced by qualified specialists. Employees who are not responsible for maintenance should not try to repair faulty equipment.
Safety of Others should be the concern of every worker. Keep fire exits clear; do not position drinks and other liquids on electrical equipment; do not leave filing cabinets open or overloaded at the top; be aware of any hazards you may be creating; make sure you know where the first-aid box is kept and the position of the fire equipment and how to get emergency help quickly if it is needed.
Observe safety notices and signs which aim to warn of danger and hazards. Become familiar with what the various signs mean.
Protective Clothing and other safety equipment should be used.

Conclusion
Students will be randomly selected to say what they have learnt in the lesson.
Evaluation
Students will be given two (2) situations and will be asked to identify the hazards, then select the most appropriate safety rule to prevent the hazardous situation.
